Mother’s Day in Panama is not just a holiday—it’s an experience that weaves together family, culture, and faith. Celebrated on December 8th, this unique day offers travelers a chance to dive deep into the heart of Panamanian traditions. From its historical roots to vibrant customs, this guide will show you why Mother’s Day in Panama is a celebration you don’t want to miss.

The History Behind Mother’s Day in Panama

The story of Mother’s Day in Panama began in 1924 when the Rotary Club proposed it as a national holiday. Initially observed in May, it wasn’t until 1930 that the celebration shifted to December 8th, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Hercilia Arias Velásquez, Panama’s First Lady at the time, championed this change to honor motherhood and its connection to faith.

This decision intertwined family values with spiritual devotion, shaping a celebration that continues to hold deep significance for Panamanians today. Moments like this are especially memorable—gathering multiple mothers in one place, including Mica’s mom, who was visiting at the time, made it a truly special occasion.

How Panamanians Celebrate Mother’s Day: A Day of Love and Connection

With my grandmother Mama Gabina, for many years during mother day, all family gathers around her to celebrate the special day

Mother’s Day in Panama begins with a melody—a serenade for mothers in the early hours of the morning. These heartfelt songs, performed by family members or hired musicians, set the tone for a day filled with love and appreciation.

The celebrations continue with family meals, where multiple generations come together. For many, it’s a rare and treasured opportunity to gather in one place. I remember as a child, these moments were magical. It wasn’t just about my mom and grandmother; it was about aunts, cousins, and even friends of the family stopping by to congratulate the mothers. It felt like an unending parade of love and laughter.

As life moved on, things changed. My mom relocated to the United States, but her connection to this tradition remained strong. One of my favorite memories was mom’s love for celebrating Mother’s Day twice a year—once on Panama’s December 8th and again in May for the U.S. holiday. And yes, she made it clear she expected both dates to be remembered and celebrated! It became a beautiful way to honor her and keep our traditions alive, no matter where we were.

Today my mother sadly, is not with us anymore, but the family of uncles, aunties, and my 102-yrs-old grandmother still gets together to celebrate mothers Day.
