The journey begins with a scenic drive into the highlands of Calobre, where open savannahs slowly give way to pine-covered ridges and volcanic rock. As you arrive at La Yeguada Forest Reserve, your guide will trace the story of Panama’s first reforestation project—led by local women in the 1960s—and how it transformed more than 2,000 hectares into a thriving pine forest ecosystem.
Walk a forest trail that weaves between pine trunks, orchids, and bird calls, pausing by the shimmering waters of the La Yeguada Lagoon, a serene artificial lake created by lava damming the volcanic basin.
From there, depending on your group’s pace and seasonal conditions, you’ll descend into the Chitra region, where geothermal energy bubbles up in natural hot springs. Along the way, you may pass coffee fincas growing beans in mineral-rich volcanic soil—an opportunity to learn about artisanal coffee production from the people who live it.
If weather allows and your group is up for a bit more exploration, we’ll visit the hidden La Silampa Waterfall, where icy mountain runoff cascades into jade-colored pools—perfect for a refreshing swim or quiet contemplation before heading back.
