In the Pacific waters of Chiriquí, whales return each year to teach us that wonder still lives just offshore.
From July to October, the Gulf of Chiriquí becomes one of the most important breeding and calving grounds for Southern Hemisphere humpback whales. These warm, protected waters offer not just an extraordinary whale watching opportunity—but a front-row seat to one of the most powerful natural events in the tropics.
You’ll begin your journey from coastal Chiriquí, boarding a local boat operated by one of our trained community partners—captains whose knowledge of the gulf is born from generations of living alongside it. As your Isthmian Adventures Naturalist Guide interprets the story unfolding at sea, keep your eyes on the horizon: a fluke breaking the water’s surface, a distant breach, or the gentle surfacing of a mother and calf.
Along the way, you may also encounter dolphins, frigatebirds, boobies, and sea turtles, depending on the day. Between sightings, you’ll pause on a remote beach for a shaded rest and a coastal meal, with time to soak in the quiet rhythms of the Pacific.
This experience supports Panacetacea, a Panamanian marine conservation foundation. Data collected during your tour helps scientists and communities better protect the whales and ecosystems we all depend on.
This is a day shaped by the rhythms of the sea. From the moment you board the boat, the Gulf stretches before you like an open stage: tranquil coves, volcanic islands, and the deep blue channels where giants rise.
Guided by your naturalist, you’ll scan for blows, tail slaps, and the full-body breaches that humpback whales are known for. These moments can be quiet or dramatic—but always meaningful.
You’ll visit a secluded beach for a relaxing pause, and along the way, keep your camera ready for surprises: dolphins, flying fish, blue-footed bobbies or a silent sea turtle gliding beneath the bow.
And when the whales appear—whether from afar or up close—the experience is not just visual, but emotional. These waters hold memory, migration, and mystery.

On an Isthmian Adventure, you will be accompanied by a Certified Interpretive & Naturalist Guide (CING). This means your guide has not only completed rigorous training in the nature, history, culture, and politics of the region, but also in the best methods for conveying knowledge in a matter that is engaging and fitting for the audience. Your guide has years of experience, is fluent in English, and annually renews their Wilderness First Aid (WFA) & CPR certifications.
