Day 1- Introduction to Mata Oscura, Mariato

This morning, we will depart from Santiago de Veraguas towards the Mariato sunset coast. The drive takes approximately two hours to reach our final destination in Mata Oscura. Upon arrival, we will meet Doña Hilda, her husband Virgilio and their family. They will share their knowledge and experiences in the farming and processing of sugar cane. From the harvesting to the process of grinding it in the trapiche (2-roll mill), to extract the juice, and the enjoyment of the final product, a fresh cup of sweet guarapo (sugar cane juice). They will also explain the artisan process of making sugar cane molasses, which is highly appreciated as a sweetener, as well as being natural and organic.

At noon, we will indulge in a delicious typical lunch, where we will learn about the local cuisine.

After lunch in the company of our knowledgeable local guide, we embark on a fascinating tour of the town of Mata Oscura. This immersive experience will take us back to the roots of the community, allowing us to visit local homes and witness the daily activities of the residents. We will have the chance to engage with the locals, hear captivating stories, and truly become a part of the community.

This is a perfect way to end our introduction to Mata Oscura and its people. After the tour, we will make our way to our lodging for the next two nights before meeting again for dinner.

Day 2 – Finca Mamacita, Mangroves and The Agua y Tierra Foundation

This morning after breakfast, we will visit Finca Mamacita, a local farm. Doña Digna and her family will guide us through their farm, where we will learn about their daily work in the field, milking cows, and tending to livestock and crops. We will also sample their farm milk by-products, including cheese and artisan yogurt.

Later, we will explore a local mangrove trail. Our knowledgeable tour guide will introduce us to the fascinating and important world of the mangrove ecosystem, including its conditions and the many adaptations of the fauna and flora that have evolved to survive in such a unique environment.

Finally, before lunch, we will visit the Agua y Tierra Foundation. Here, we will learn about the highly endangered species of sea turtles that nest on the Mata Oscura beach, as well as the challenges and efforts made by the foundation and the local community to protect them.
Lunch and Afternoon Activities

Lunch, as before, will consist of a sample of the local cuisine. In the afternoon, you will have the freedom to enjoy the beach, explore the community, or participate in some of the optional experiences offered by the community. These experiences may include cooking lessons or crafts with a local artisan.

Tonight on our farewell dinner, we have an exciting surprise for you! We will be treated to a demonstration of traditional folkloric dances performed by the local dance community group.

Day 3 – Departure

This morning, we bid farewell to our newfound friends and prepare to journey to Santiago. There, you will embark on your adventures in Panama, armed with a fresh set of cherished memories and a deep sense of contributing to the sustainable tourism initiatives of a local community.
